The 11th AIDA Quadrennial Congress in New York was held on October 20-25, 2002. It was the first time in the history of AIDA that the US chapter has hosted the World Congress. The Congress had strong support from within the insurance industry with representatives of insurance, reinsurance and financial service companies, as well as loss adjusters, brokers, consultants, risk managers, accountants, academics and attorneys. In excess of 50 National Chapters located throughout Africa, North and South America, New Zealand and Europe attended the Congress.

The first theme of the Congress was "Alternative Compensation Mechanisms to Liability insurance for Damages other than those caused by Automobile Accidents". The General Reporters for this theme were Professors Hubert Bocken of Germany and Bill Dufwa of Sweden.

The second theme of the Congress was the "Integration of Financial Services." There was a special emphasis on recent initiatives taken or proposed in various countries. The General Reporter for this theme was Cornell Law Professor Jonathan R. Macey of the USA.

On Wednesday 23 October, there was a Special Programme entitled "Impact: The World Trade Centre Tragedy" and:- (1) "Aviation Insurance"; (2) "Workers Compensation Claims"; (3) "Risk Management".

During the Congress particular attention was also paid to other emerging issues of vital concern to industry professionals. For example, different international techniques for resolution of consumer disputes were discussed.
