2. News From The Presidential Council

The President of AIDA, Professor Dr Carlos Ignacio Jaramillo welcomed everyone to the Presidential Council meeting, held in Rio de Janeiro on 30 April 2003, and extended thanks to the host chapter, Brazil for their generous hospitality.

Tributes were paid to Professor Reimer Schmidt, Honorary President, and Dr Brando Battistig, Assistant Secretary-General, both of whom had sadly died in the last year. A minute's silence was observed in their honour. Professor Hübner led the tribute to Professor Schmidt, hailing him as the greatest insurance lawyer in Germany in the last 40 years. Professor Gambino paid tribute to Dr Battistig, as one of the finest and most longstanding representatives of AIDA. His production of the Yearbook was also remembered

CILA

Dr Louis Felipe Pellon, president of the Brazilian section, and Dr Eduardo Mangialardi, President of CILA delivered warm messages of welcome to the Presidential Council, both appreciating the support that was being offered to the CILA conference, and the fact that so many had to travel so far. The next CILA conference, in 2005 will be held in Mexico, followed by Chile in 2007 and Uruguay in 2009.

President's Work Programme for AIDA 2002-2006

Professor Jaramillo focused his address on his Work Plan, a summary of which is included below. The full work plan can be viewed on the AIDA website by clicking here.

The plan was welcomed enthusiastically by the Presidential Council. Whilst the Work Plan was very ambitious, the President considered it to be a continuous project to be achieved over many years, and with the participation of all members of AIDA and particularly the Presidential Council. The plan will be continuously monitored and reviewed.

Support was also offered to the Italian chapter in their project to produce a book in tribute to Professor Antigono Donati.

XIIth World Congress Buenos Aires 2006

Dr Speyer, President of the Argentine Chapter, reported on progress. The topic nominated by the hosts will be "Influence of Scientific and Technological Progress on Insurance in the Protection of Individuals". The second topic, to be decided by the Presidential Council, will be discussed at a future meeting.

AIDA Working Parties

Brief reports on the activities of the following working parties were delivered by their chairmen: Motor (Dr Zimolo); Accumulation of Claims and Subrogation (Dr Speyer); Consumer Protection and Dispute Resolution (Professor Kullman); Pensions (Professor de Lange); and Reinsurance (Colin Croly).

AIDA Yearbook

In view of the untimely death of Dr Battistig, Professor Lourdes Fernandez del Moral Dominguez, and Professor Carlo Giampaolino were appointed as provisional Assistant Secretaries General. A permanent appointment is to be made at the next Presidential Council meeting.

AIDA Website and AIDA Mail

Colin Croly, the Secretary-General, reported that AIDA Mail and the AIDA Website were dependant on contributions from the AIDA membership, in order to ensure that the website would remain current and that AIDA Mail would have sufficient copy.

Date and venue of next meeting

To coincide with a Colloquium to be held at the University of Brussels in the first week of December 2003 on the subject of Workmen's Compensation Insurance, the Presidential Council will be meeting in Belgium on Thursday 4 December 2003 at the Insuranc Institute in Brussels. Working Party meetings will also take place at this time.
