RECENT MEETINGS OF THE WORKING PARTY

Nineteenth Meeting: Marrakesh - 25 April 2019

The nineteenth meeting of the CCEWP took place on Thursday 25 April 2019 at the Savoy Hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco during the AIDA Morocco Conference (23-25 April 2019).

It took the form of a contributory part of the plenary session on the final morning of the Conference between the hours of 09:30hrs and 13:00hrs on the topic of "Catastrophic Events & Insurance".

Tim Hardy (UK) introduced the session with a presentation upon Catastrophic Events, Insurance, Climate Change and Insurability from an international perspective

Mr Bachir Baddhou (Morocco), Director General of the Moroccan Insurance & Reinsurance Federation (FMSAR), spoke on Moroccan plans for compulsory coverage for catastrophic events.

Rich Traub (US) provided a Climate Change Update - Climate change litigation in the U.S.

Chris Rodd (Australia) made a presentation upon The insurance ramifications of Climate Change in Australia

A Report prepared by Maria Kavanagh (Argentina) and the MERCOSUR Group was also prepared and introduced to the session, addressing the particular challenges faced in the region of South America including the impact of major drought in Argentina and elsewhere in the worlds of agriculture and insurance and the continuing problems of environmental destruction in the wake of the Mina Gerais landslide in Brazil and other recent catastrophic events there. Peggy Sharon (Israel) upon Israeli provision for agricultural natural hazard losses

and

Jerome Kullmann (France) upon Compulsory Insurance for natural disasters introduced in France.

Eighteenth Meeting: Rio de Janeiro - 13 October 2018

The eighteenth meeting of the CCEWP took place between 15:15 hrs and 17:15 hrs on Saturday 13 October 2018 at the Windsor Convention & Expo Center in Rio de Janeiro during the XV AIDA World Congress (11-13 October 2018).

The theme of the meeting chaired by Tim Hardy (UK) was: "Touching the Void? The role of resilience, reinsurance, technology and survival strategies in the face of Climate Change and catastrophe".

Among the speakers and contributors were:

Gloria Faria (Brazil) - The aftermath of the Fundao Dam disaster in Mariana and Future Mandatory Environment Insurance in Brazil - English - Spanish - Portuguese

Pery Saraiva Neto (Brazil) - Individual Damage and its Mass Projection: First Party Mandatory Environmental Insurance as a Tool for Resilience

Chris Rodd (Australia) - What's Happening in the World's Second Driest Continent?

Materials presented at the meeting, included a presentation and notes by Rich Traub (US) upon Climate Change Litigation Insurance Implications.

Seventeenth Meeting: Warsaw - 13 April 2018

The seventeenth meeting of the CCEWP took the form of a joint meeting with the AIDA Reinsurance WP and was held between 14:00hrs and 15:30 hrs on Friday 13 April 2018 at the Hotel Sofitel Victoria in Warsaw during the 7th AIDA Europe Conference (12-13 April 2018).

Attached is the Agenda of that meeting.

Topic: The role and requirements of reinsurance in addressing potentially greater future catastrophe losses.

  • Where and how reinsurance can/does best help provide effective protection against the risk of ever-greater losses being suffered worldwide from natural and man-made catastrophes
  • Essential features and requirements, both contractual, regulatory and otherwise
  • Limitations of, and challenges to, traditional reinsurance products and catastrophe risk modelling
  • Illustrations in both developed and emerging markets of techniques, innovations and applications necessary to realise essential goals of: capacity/availability/affordability of cover; contract and regulatory certainty/limitation of risk/cashflow; interface with State support/finance/relief; and contribution to risk management and Climate Change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
  • Cat modelling; cat bonds; recent event/aggregation/loss coverage scenarios, lessons and responses; examples of State scheme interfaces; microinsurance; contrasting levels worldwide of insured/uninsured ratios and proposed responses.

Sixteenth Meeting: Singapore - 18 October 2017

The sixteenth meeting took place on Wednesday 18 October 2017 at Raffles City Convention Centre, Raffles City, Singapore between the hours of 08:30hrs and 10:30hrs during the three-day Asia-Pacific Insurance Conference (APIC17) (18-20 October 2017).
